Membership

When you realize “this is my spiritual home” and you no longer view yourself as a guest, it is time to consider becoming a member of Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. You may request a mentor to help you though the process. Full membership is open to all persons, 18 years of age or older, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, affectional or sexual orientation, or gender identity. We embrace the richness that comes from diversity.

You do not have to be a member to participate in the activities of our Fellowship. We encourage everyone to become involved and take their time before making the commitment of membership.

Members and Friends

There are two categories of those who actively participate in our Fellowship:

  1.  Voting Members, and
  2.  Non-voting Friends of the Fellowship.

Both are expected to be in sympathy with and actively support the vision, mission, and principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association and our Fellowship. Friends may not vote; they are encouraged to work with our volunteer committees, but may not serve as a committee chair.

Benefits of Membership

Membership in our Fellowship brings with it the benefits of belonging to a liberal religious community that affirms the individual search for truth and meaning, and encourages acting on UU principles. As a member, you will:

  • be empowered to vote in congregational meetings to elect leaders and adopt a budget, and you may serve as a Committee Chair or Board Member.
  • receive a subscription to the UU World Magazine, the journal of the Unitarian Universalist Association, which provides inspirational and practical articles on living our UU principles; and
  • help create a modern faith that celebrates reason, inclusiveness, and ethical living. You will join others locally and globally who share the values of reason and tolerance in matters of faith and who recognize that religious inspiration comes from not one, but many spiritual sources.

Path to Membership Process
(revised 10-2016)

  1. Attend a Path to Membership Class. This gathering provides essential information about our Fellowship and Unitarian Universalism. Learn about our beliefs, history, structure as a congregation, and the expectations and benefits of membership. The gathering includes the participation of longer-term members, and childcare is available upon request. Contact us to find out when the next gathering will be.
  2. Share your time, talent and treasure, according to your ability: make a financial pledge,  join a committee or attend a committee event, or volunteer to help with a project. This can include helping with the set-up and clean-up for our monthly potluck lunch, yard clean-up, serving as a Sunday greeter, etc.
  3.  When you have completed these steps and so request, the Membership Committee chair will submit your application for membership to the Board of Directors for their vote of approval.
  4. Upon approval by the Board, you will be invited to make your official commitment to the Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship by signing our Membership book.
  5. Participate in a special New Member Welcoming Ceremony held annually during a regular Sunday service.

We hope that you will find a welcoming, inclusive, stimulating spiritual home here and join us at Amarillo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
